| The Basics |
Character Name: Andromeda Cassiopea Tonks. PB: Mary-Louise Parker. Age: 47. Birthday: October 23rd. Wand: Detailed elm wand. It is just shy of nine inches long. This wand's core is salamander bone. House in School: Slytherin, of course. Andie was never one to rock the boat--even if she did eventually get herself thrown out of her family. Bloodline: Pureblooded--and that dratted tapestry is probably still about somewhere to prove it. Political View: Andromeda's view of the government has been steadily Not Good since the announcement of the registry--although she does see the merit in keeping track of prior Death Eaters--she just thinks the Ministry is doing a shoddy job of deciding who needs to be watched and who doesn't. The Ministry has been giving her a Headache for a while now, and she's finally decided she should probably look into trying to do something about that. Despite Andromeda's dislike for politics in general (she prefers to be firmly rooted in Neutrality), she dislikes prejudice and injustice even more. So it's about time to look into what's going on and what the options are, and decide just where she stands. She by no means adheres to Pureblooded ideals--Andie never has. Not even when she was younger--she would just always settle herself into a neat little position of Neutral, and say things that made it seem as though she were agreeing or disagreeing as required by her family--when she was really saying nothing of consequence at all. |
| Appearance |
Height: Five foot six. Weight: One hundred and thirty pounds. Eyes: They're a very dark brown. Hair: Black--with a great deal of kinks and waves. Andromeda wears her hair in a great variety of styles--although she's long since stopped her school-years habit of charming her hair other colours. Charming it as such, mind--not changing as Dora would. Build: Slender, rather willowy. Dress Style: Andie's style ranges from elegant to funky, but she is always, always fashionable. She's also always comfortable--because while Andromeda has always been highly interested in fashion, she has never been interested in suffering for the sake of it. She's usually in muggle clothes of some sort, as she and Ted are rather on the outskirts of the Wizarding world, and more in the Muggle one. Basic Physical Description: -- Defining Marks: Andromeda was very pretty in her youth, and remains as such today--she was always of the quieter sort of looks than her sisters, and is much the same now. She looks rather warm and like someone who has lived and laughed and loved--and she smiles quite often. Andie doesn't have many scars at all--she's never really done anything that would get her any, and unlike her daughter, Andromeda has all the grace of a pureblooded daughter reared to perfection. The few scars she does have are rather mundane--a blob on her inner arm where she accidentally shifted while holding a hot brownie pan (while wearing oven mitts) and hit the inner bit with a scorching corner, another blob on her right knee (although a bit more noticable) from where she fell of a bicycle at the age of twenty-two, when Ted was teaching her to ride one, and a scar on her left heel, when she discovered Dora had broken a vase--by stepping on one of the pieces. |
| Personality |
Andromeda is good with blending into a scene and playing at being peacemaker. She's all about balance, really. She was the diplomat of her family when she was younger, and was quite a job--the Black family is by no means an easy thing to belong to. Even now, she is the diplomat of her current family (which is a rather good thing, considering she's also the one who was slapped with the registration). Creativity is one of Andie's strong points. She's very into arts & crafts of any sort, and sewing is her very favourite sort. All of Andie's clothes are either handmade or have some sort of alteration courtesy herself. She's into fashion in a very large way, and could spend days shopping or looking at fabrics. She's prone to making her family and very close friends any number of clothing pieces as presents. Ted and Dora are often cast as models for anything she'd like to make--Ted more often than Dora, now that Dora has moved out. There is some speculation as to why Andie was in Slytherin; she's polite, poised, friendly, easy to talk to, sympathetic, and good at putting people at ease. But those qualities are just the most obvious. Andie has ambition; she wanted to be her own person, and do something she loved rather than something her parents wanted her to do (namely, become a society wife to someone dreadfully dull). Andie has secrets, and many times she will keep her opinion to herself: because being closemouthed has it's advanages. Cunning? Well, she was perfectly able to function in a family where politics were more than enough to get you killed or blasted off the tree. Andie was able to make herself seem harmless to certain family members who did not appreciate threats (most notably her older sister, Bellatrix, and Aunt Walburga) and was always able to exist in an oddly peaceful state of relations. She's got a gift with words and people, and is perfectly content with playing things out so that she can maintain her state of relative peace--she is not at all interested in rocking the boat or drawing more attention than necessary. Resourcefulness? Bucketloads. She's never left speechless, and there's always a way to solve a problem. Family is important in a big way to Andromeda. She loves her family, deranged though they are, to pieces. She's loyal, though not in the I'll-do-whatever-you-say sort of way, or I-believe-everything-you-say sort of way. It's the I-love-you-no-matter-what sort of way. If you know this about Andromeda, it's not quite so odd that she still loves her family, even if they are pretending she doesn't exist. Blood purity is not as important. This is something that is a bit harder to understand. She grew up in a family that adamantly followed pureblooded ideals--and still do to this day. Andie never really had a chance to learn the other side of the story, in her childhood. Or rather, she was never given that chance. That does not mean she did not find it. Andromeda was always a smart girl; she was always a thoughtful girl. And though she will go out of her way not to rock the boat whenever she can, she is not a sheep. Andie has her own set of ideas and opinions, even if she does not see fit to voice them. Andromeda likes to laugh. She loves jokes and amusing stories and little skits--it's one of the reasons she adored Sirius so much: he could always make her laugh. Cleanliness is next to godliness. This is one saying Andie can get on board with, and she can't stand any sort of mess. She will invade your privacy and clean your room, if she happens to see it and find it a mess. And it's not out of the ordinary for her to clean the entire house. Particularly if she's upset for some reason. Andromeda was raised in an upperclass family. Her tastes can be expensive, but they are impeccable--she's used to luxury and comfort, and while she adores Muggle things and simple things, she's a bit more spoiled than she really cares to admit. Andie is definately not one of the 'let's go camping' girls. She's also not a Quidditch girl. Mud, anyone? Books are fun. Greek Mythology, in particular, interests Andie. |
| Psychology |
Extrovert/Introvert: Andromeda falls somewhere between the two. She's probably closer to an extrovert in truth--but she always played the part of the reserved daughter when it came to her family, in order to draw less attention. She's always friendly and willing to chat, though--so an extrovert who tends to keep to herself at times. Boggart Would Be: Andie's boggart? Ted and Dora--casting her from their little family circle. Yes, she realizes this is ridiculous--it's Ted and Dora, after all. But it has happened to her before--the family she loved all her life (still loves, past all reason) cast her out because she happened to fall in love with a muggle. And while she knows Ted and Dora won't--would never--cast her from them, or stop loving her--she can't help but be terrified of the idea. Patronus Would Be: Andie's patronus is a bear. Traditionally, Bears stand for: Primal power, mother, cunning, healer, gentle strength, dreaming, sovereignty, intuition married with instinct. Nurturing, protective. At least, according to my Handy Dandy Symbolism guide (Why we own this, I have no idea). I believe all of these traits fit in nicely with Andie's personality, so. Bear it is! She spent a great deal of her Hogwarts years learning to defend herself against the Dark Arts--which is why she is the only Black sister to have bothered to learn a Patronus. |
| Sexuality |
Straight, as far as she's aware. Although Andromeda never really considered any alternatives--if she had to think about it, she'd probably still be straight. However, she's very happily married--so any relationships outside of Ted? Not going to happen. |
| Lifestyle |
Occupation: Andie owns and runs a small clothing store--she makes all the clothes. It sells mostly muggle attire, although there is a section in the back with Wizarding garments, charmed against muggles so that it only looks like a wall. Residence: A cozy home in Liverpool--which is always, always clean. Andromeda is obsessive about cleaning, really, and dirt in her home? Not on. Financial Status: Upper middle class--the Tonks' were lower middle class while they were raising Dora--but now that they no longer support their daughter, they find themselves with a bit more money. Which is good, since Andie's tastes tend to be a bit expensive--which rather comes from her upbringing. |
| Family |
Parents: Cygnus and Druella Black. Siblings: Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy. Andromeda's relationship with her family has drastically changed since her childhood, and her family itself has changed; so I'm going to seperate this into two parts: one for Before Ted and one for After. Because accepting Ted Tonk's proposal? Was the point where her life was turned upside down--or rather, where the changes became visible within her family. Before Ted: Andromeda never really had any sort of relationship at all with her father. He was always more interested in Bellatrix, of the three of them, and that in a perfectly twisted sort of way (which managed to be normal when compared to other relationships within the Black family). And Andromeda simply did not really wish to step into his notice--as a child, Andie's instincts for how to keep herself in a relative state of peace were very, very good. They continue to be as such today--but back then, she was perfectly able to function in a family where politics were more than enough to get you killed or blasted off the tree. Andie was able to make herself seem harmless to certain family members who did not appreciate threats (most notably her older sister, Bellatrix, and Aunt Walburga) and was always able to exist in an oddly peaceful state of relations. She had (and still has) a gift with words and people, and was perfectly content with playing things out so that she could maintain her state of relative peace in the Black family--she was not at all interested in rocking the boat or drawing more attention than necessary. Her mother, Andromeda had more of a relationship with. Andie was perfectly able to fit herself into her mother's image of a 'fine young lady'--even if that was not always precisely true. Andie enjoyed quiet pursuits (and still does), and more often than not could be found at embroidery or with a book in the courtyard. Her sisters were the most important part of her younger life. Toddlers are not adapt at pronouncing the long and fancy names that the Black family is prone to giving; thus, Andromeda became 'Andie' the moment Bellatrix learned to speak. Narcissa, born when Andie was just figuring out the whole business of walking, became 'Cissy'. It was Andromeda, when she learned to speak, who dubbed Bellatrix 'Bella', toddling along after her older sister. She also tended to refer to Narcissa as 'Cissa' rather than 'Cissy'. The three Black sisters grew up very closely, because of their close ages and because the list of approved playmates was very, very short. And their parents were rather distant--most of their raising was done by tutors and governesses. Bella was their ringleader--she'd come up with ideas and plans and talk or bribe or force her sisters into following along. Andie could talk them out of most punishments, and was just mostly content to trail along in Bella's wake, though she was just as likely to go and do her own thing. Andromeda loved her sisters, and still does. Family is one of the most important things in the world to Andie, and always has been. She's loyal, though not in the I'll-do-whatever-you-say sort of way, or I-believe-everything-you-say sort of way. It's the I-love-you-no-matter-what sort of way. Andie grew apart from her sisters a little as they got older and engaged in their own interests--she became more likely to go play with Sirius than her sisters, at family parties, pulling tricks he'd thought up. She was still close to them--she still was in their company extremely often. She just tended to keep to herself a little more. Sirius and Regulus were also very important parts of her life, though her relationship with Sirius was much stronger--and eventually proved itself to be the strongest relationship she had with any in her family, as he was the only one (outside of Crazy Uncle Alphard) to acknowledge her after Ted. Sirius was born ~1960 (according to the Lexicon) when Andromeda was ~7 years old. She insantly took to her cousin, and was fascinated with the baby, often begging her Aunt for a chance to hold her little cousin. She doted on him as he grew older (and did much the same for Regulus when he was born, although she was perhaps a little more inclined to smile at Sirius) and was absolutely ecstatic when he learned to walk, and began to follow Andie around whenever she visited. He was much more a 'rebel' then Andie was, and she adored listening to Sirius--and really, she might have had something to do with how he turned out, as he could Do No Wrong in her eyes. He came to Hogwarts when Andie was in her sixth year, and she was the only one in the family to be proud of him after the Sorting--during which her darling little cousin became the first member of the Black family to be sorted any place other than Slytherin. There was a great deal of pressure for a 'pure blood' marriage--and it was Andie's choice of a husband that ultimately changed everything. After Ted: The only members of the Black family who acknowledged Andromeda after her engagement to Ted Tonks were Sirius and Crazy Uncle Alphard. In two seperate ways, of course: Uncle Alphard with a little note of congrats, and Sirius with constant letters from Hogwarts whenever he could manage it, and demands for updates on Andie's life. Sirius was, in effect, the last link Andromeda had to her family, and she was impossibly grateful to him for that. To everyone else? She was dead. She did, however, gain two new members to her family (although one of them didn't show up until 1972). The first addition was her husband: Ted Tonks. Andromeda quite frankly believes Ted to be the love of her life, and adores him without reserve. Even if he isn't quite as organized as she would like. The second addition was her daughter: Nymphadora Tonks. Dora was quite possibly the happiest thing (after Ted, of course) to ever happen to Andromeda. She completely loves her daughter (even if she isn't organized at all, either!) and Dora does a great deal for the hole in Andie's life where her sisters and cousins used to be. Andromeda, quite frankly, would love to see her daughter settle down someday, and would be ecstatic to have grandchildren. |
| History |
The first time Andie picked up a needle, she was five. She and her sisters had been tutored privately for as long as she could remember, of course, in a myriad of different things, but this was the first time that she was to learn to embroider. Bella was rather bored by the thought, and Narcissa, though she worked at it diligently, had no interest in the activity other than needing to know it to become accomplished. And Andie? Andie fell head over heels in love. Sewing has always fascinated her; making things has always fascinated her. Andromeda grew up in a family that taught her to appreciate beauty, and making beauty was a tantalizing thought. It was one of the most important moments in her life, though it was comparitively small in the scheme of things. From that moment on, Andie hounded her teachers for lessons on thread and needles, and was given books on the subject (as it was not an unseemly hobby for a girl of good breeding, though her obsession with it was somewhat worrying). When she was eight years old, Andie 'got lost' from a family outing to Knockturn Alley accidentally-on-purpose. She immediately found her way out of Diagon Alley and into Muggle London. Why did she do it? Because she had only heard the same thing always about muggles and muggleborns from her family, and then, at the last dinner party she'd been to, she'd overheard a conversation her Uncle Alphard was holding with her father. Well--'overheard' was putting it rather politely, as Andie had been eavesdropping on a whispered argument. Alphard seemed to be displaying a clashing opinion on muggles, and it was one Andromeda had never before heard voiced in her family, though it was still fairly purebloodist--but anything less than full-fledged purebloodism was shockingly new to Andie at that point in time. It was not smart to simply ask someone about it, because nothing was straightforward in her family. So she determined to investigate the matter on her own. In muggle london, Andie managed to find small, family-owned diner, after wandering around for half an hour in a state of complete shock (she had no idea what the cars were, or many of the other things), garnering odd stares from both her clothing and her reactions to perfectly everyday things. She'd been brought in by the owner of the place, a no-nonsense woman named Ruby, who'd sat Andie down with a plate of pancakes and asked her if she knew her phone number (which had elicited a very blank stare). Her parents found her there an hour later, and dragged her home (after scaring Ruby and everyone else in the diner). Andie managed to successfully pass the experiment off as just getting lost, and received a great deal of sympathy about having to stay in the company of 'those horrid creatures'. It was around that time when Andromeda decided to learn (quietly) everything she could about muggles, and the politics of the Black family. And learn she did--It was not a need to rebel against her family (because she didn't want to rebel, not really) that drove her to do as such, or bitterness, or anything but curiosity and a genuine appreciation of their world. Muggle clothing interested Andie to no end, as did Muggle literature--she had a collection of Muggle things (carefully smuggled into her world) hidden in her room. Another important time in Andie's life would be Bella's departure for Hogwarts. Bellatrix had always been the leader in the trio of Black girls, and both younger sisters were somewhat at a loss at first. Andie soon learned to appreciate the sudden abscence of one of the most demanding precensces in her life. Though she loved her sister, she knew perfectly well that Bellatrix was more than a little controlling. Andie's own Hogwarts letter was also an important event for her. Her sorting was no surprise. Blacks were Slytherins. End of story. Although the Sorting Hat did consider Ravenclaw, Andie insisted on Slytherin. She was not one to rock the boat. Andie's third year, Narcissa joined the other two at school. The Black sisters were reunited, though Andie was even less likely to hang about than before. Bella's friends made her nervous, and she preferred to keep to herself or make her own friends. Sirius joined the remaining sisters in Andie's sixth year, after Bella had graduated. She fully expected Sirius to be sorted into Slytherin as well, as he was called up directly after her. He was not. Andromeda was perhaps the most accepting of this (she was the only Slytherin to clap and cheer, and while this did earn her several glares she was mostly left alone, because that Bellatrix girl was rather scary and Andromeda was her sister), and made a point of catching Sirius in the halls to chat. Neither of their houses liked this much at first, but it soon became commonplace--and Andie really was difficult to dislike. Seventh year was when things changed for Andie. She began speaking more and more often with Ted Tonks, with whom she was partnered in Potions, and they began to speak about more than potions--and one thing led to another and they ended up spending a Hogsmeade weekend at the three broomsticks, laughing over a mug of butterbeer. It was around this time (between dodging Narcissa, of course, whom would have reported Andie to their mother) that Andromeda realized she was completely and totally smitten with muggleborn Ted Tonks. She was very straightforward about her family--the dodging-of-Narcissa was a very mutal thing, although Andie did take aside an twelve-year-old Sirius and introduce her favourite cousin and Ted. They decided not to make a decision until graduation, as they couldn't be certain what would happen. After they were declared free of Hogwarts, Ted told her he wanted to continue dating. She felt the same. They spent the next year dating (with not a few close calls when certain members of the family wondered just where Andie was running off to) while Andie's mother tried to marry her off. And then, on Andie's eighteenth birthday, Ted proposed. Andromeda, of course, accepted--despite what it would do to her family. She hoped they would understand--that they could see how wonderful Ted was. She was promptly thrown out and scorched off the tapestry--and quite dramatically ceased to exist for the people she loved so much. Except for Uncle Alphard (who wrote a somewhat odd letter telling her he was happy for her) and Sirius (whom snuck Andie letters whenever he could from home, and wrote constantly during his school years, and thought she was bloody brilliant). Andromeda moved in with Ted, in a very small house they managed to buy with help from Ted's parents in Liverpool, which they deemed a good spot for a muggleborn and a pureblood to settle--there was a muggle community and a wizarding one. They had a very good relationship with Ted's parents (who were absolutely smitten with Andromeda, and who lived near enough that they could drop in at any time) and the Tonks' helped the young couple along quite well. After their marriage, Ted pushed Andie into doing what she'd always wanted to do: opening a shop of her own, selling clothing she'd made on her own. They managed quite happily for a year, when chaos struck again, in the form of one Nymphadora Tonks. Both of the older Tonks' were absolutely in love with their daughter--despite the handful she was. Andromeda couldn't possibly imagine a more perfect life. She and Ted managed to bring Dora up to be a bright young woman, and couldn't be more proud. The next notable thing to happen, in fact, happened over the summer between Sirius's fifth and sixth year, when Sirius ran away to live with the Potters. Andie, unlike the rest of the family, did not hate Sirius for this, and kept up correspondance, with a dazzling number of photographs of herself and Ted--in return, she got photographs of the Marauders, and several amusing tales from her cousin. In 1981, when Nymphadora was eight, the Potters were murdered and Sirius was called their killer. Andromeda refused to believe this verdict, and would not hear a word against him from her family--and persisted in telling Dora all sorts of stories about her 'Uncle Sirius'. The Tonks family had rather withdrawn from the wizarding world before the birth of Dora, and they continued to do so after her birth--despite her early signs of magic. Both Andie and Ted wanted desperately to protect their only child, and the only way they could see to do that was to keep her in the Muggle world--which was considerably safer. However, in 1984, when Dora received her Hogwarts letter, the couple had no choice but to send their daughter--after not a few family meetings and discussions (although Dora was rather more arguing than discussing). Over the course of her years there, Nymphadora voiced her desire to be an auror (which quite nearly sent Andie into hysterics the first time she told her parents this, over a rather memorable Christmas dinner)--and was promptly accepted into a training program after graduation. The Tonks family is very close, and stays in touch with their daughter (Andie demands family dinners on a regular basis, so that she and Ted are up to speed)--and both her parents use her full name or 'Dora'. Andie and Ted have both managed the rather miraculous task of staying unaffilated thus far in life--although their only child is an Order member. She's pleased about the whole 'no more Voldemort' thing, and thinks Harry must be rather like his father and Sirius, to have done all that. Lucius Malfoy is an example of Stupid Government Choices. So is Bella, actually, although Andie is torn on that point. As for Remus's position...Andie thinks it's perfectly alright. I think she'd probably know him through Sirius, at least, and would think him a perfectly brilliant lad. Who still needs more meat on his bones. The most important thing that's happened, though? Andie's registered. Being the sister of the notorious Bellatrix Black--even if said sister won't admit they're relations. She wears her tracking device as a bracelet, and it is white leather--signifying that she is the immediate family of a known Death Eater. It was a slap in the face to the entire Tonks family--although Andromeda didn't want to tell Nymphadora at first, so as not to worry her. She's currently trying to get an appeal. |
